I’ve always been fascinated by the ocean—the mystery, the beauty, the sense of another world just below the surface. For years, I've been mesmerized by freediving videos and the grace of divers moving effortlessly through deep blue water. Until last week, I did something I never, ever thought I could do.
So why freediving? It was a challenge
As I write this, I am someone who took one lesson, and this is the story of my first freediving session, and how I learned that the ocean isn't something to fight, but to embrace.
It’s About Breathing, Not Holding Your Breath
We started on dry land. This was my first relief. Freediving, I learned, is 90% mental and 10% physical. We spent a significant amount of time just… breathing.
Sir Kim taught me diaphragmatic breathing—deep, slow breaths that fill your lungs and calm your nervous system. We practiced breath-hold techniques on the wooden bangko, not in the water. This demystified the entire concept. It wasn't about suffering without air; it was about relaxing with the air you have. This was my first tool against fear: a calm mind starts with a calm breath.
To be continued...
